What is the process like to qualify for SSD benefits?

On Behalf of | Nov 2, 2021 | Social Security Disability

Qualifying for Social Security disability benefits can be important for many disabled individuals and their families. Those seeking Social Security disability (SSD) benefits should know how to qualify to position themselves as well as possible as they navigate the challenging application process.

How to qualify for benefits

There are two main components of qualifying for SSD benefits. The first requirement is that the disabled individual must meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disability. In general, this requires that they suffer from a medical condition that is severe enough that it prevents them from working and is expected to last for greater than a year or result in death. The disabled applicant can demonstrate the disabling medical condition they suffer from through the medical records and may also qualify for expedited processing of their claim for disability benefits if the medical condition they suffer from is on the SSA’s compassionate allowances list.

The second component required to qualify for SSD benefits is that the disabled individual has the necessary work history credits to qualify. If they do not, other options may be available to them. The disabled applicant must have enough work history credits that were earned at the right time. Because the number of work history credits needed to qualify for benefits varies by year, it is important for the disabled individual to know what the requirement is that they must meet when they are applying.

It is important to note that, in order to receive benefits, the disabled individual must meet both of these requirements. Because many applications are initially denied, it is beneficial to be aware of what is mandated, and how the disabled individual can demonstrate that they meet the requirements when applying for SSD benefits.
