Some undocumented immigrants are becoming licensed drivers

In some states outside North Carolina, people who are undocumented may now be able to obtain drivers' licenses. Undocumented immigrants now have the opportunity obtain licenses to drive even though they do not have legal residence in the country. Many of the 2.5 million who are undocumented in one West Coast state have expressed their happiness over the recent changes.

One 44-year-old man who is undocumented said that he has been driving without a license for an extended period of time in order to make the 15-mile daily commute to his place of work. He stated that he achieved close to a perfect score on his tests and obtained his driver's license in March of this year. The District of Columbia and 10 states have shown support for allowing those without legal statuses to apply for valid licenses to drive.

Some who support the idea of immigrants without legal statuses obtaining drivers' licenses say that allowing it will have a positive effect on road safety, because those with valid licenses are more prone to cooperate with traffic law enforcement, as well as more likely to acquire auto insurance. A recent survey suggested that 64 percent of Americans who were asked are against the idea of immigrants who are not documented receiving licenses to drive. Reportedly, 52 percent of Latinos surveyed have voiced support for the measures.

Whether North Carolina lawmakers take measures to ensure that undocumented immigrants have driving privileges remains to be seen. However, any person who has questions or concerns about taking steps to legitimize his or her status or wishes to learn more about the process for obtaining a valid driver's license may seek assistance from a legal professional who has experience in immigration and naturalization law. Data suggests that many undocumented people are operating motor vehicles without licenses; therefore, those in that situation may benefit from competent legal advice.
