Three workers sustained injuries after falling almost 24 feet

Workplace injury is a cause for concern for those living in North Carolina and elsewhere. Recently, three workers from San Antonio who were working at the Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties facility in Ohio were injured in a collapse as they were erecting a rebar concrete form.

The construction site accident happened on Dec. 16 around 9:40 a.m. According to reports, the men fell off of a structure and plunged 24 feet to the ground.

Two of the workers were flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and the University of Toledo Medical Center. The third worker, whose injuries were less serious, was taken to a hospital by ambulance. The decision was made to use the helicopters to transport the two workers as a precautionary measure because of the remote area of the facility. All three workers have since been released from the hospital.

Work has been closed on that portion of the site. Martin Marietta has begun an internal investigation, and the United States Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration is also investigating. The company does not know the extent of the worker's injuries yet, and it is still unaware of the cause of the collapse.

High winds around the facility could have contributed to the collapse of the structure. The quality of the rebar used in the structure also may have been a factor in the accident. The workers appear to have been using correct safety measures, and were said to be tied off properly to the structure.

It is likely that all three men will have lost wages and incurred medical costs for the time they spent in the hospital. Workers in North Carolina who are injured while on the job and need assistance navigating the workers' compensation process may wish to speak to someone who is experienced in this area. Someone knowledgeable may be able to assist these workers in filing the appropriate paperwork for a claim, and to ensure they receive all of the benefits that they deserve.
