Sanitation worker killed in workplace accident

Most people go to work expecting that they will make it back home safe and sound at the end of the day. Here in America we expect our workplaces to be safe. Unfortunately, that was not true for one young man when tragedy struck not far from Greensboro.

On Oct. 25 a sanitation worker was tragically killed when he was run over by a garbage truck.

The 20-year-old victim was killed when he accidentally fell off the back of a garbage truck as the driver was backing up. The driver was said to be going about 15 mph at the time of the accident. Other workers helplessly tried to get the attention of the 64-year-old driver without success. Authorities indicated that no citations would be issued because the matter was considered to be an accident.

The family of the victim will no doubt mourn the loss of their loved one, a life cut tragically short by the workplace injury. Nothing can bring back the young man, but his family may be entitled to compensation for this tragic situation.

An individual or family in a similar situation may benefit from conferring with a North Carolina attorney experienced in worker's compensation law. The lawyer may offer some much needed support, prepare and file the appropriate paperwork and ensure the family receives all of the benefits it is due. Of course it would have been better if the accident had not happened at all, but at least the family may have some sort of recourse.
